How I'm Staying Sane During Lockdown from a Hairstylist

Look, I’m no mental health professional… But I’m pretty much on the brink of insanity at all times, so I feel like I know a thing or two about how to stay afloat in anxious waters. Here are some ways I’ve been able to keep a (mostly) stable mood throughout this weirdo alternate universe situation we’ve been in the last several weeks.

  • Take a shower. Even if it’s quick - you don’t even have to use soap. Just get your booty in that shower and run some warm water over yourself.

  • Change out of yesterday’s PJs and into, I don’t know, like, a different set of PJs or something? Just get all of yesterday’s stank off of yourself somehow.

  • Do a simple skincare routine. Even if all you can muster up is a little moisturizer, it makes a big difference and feels nice.

  • Put on a lil makeup! Nothing too crazy. Tinted moisturizer, mascara, and a cute lip stain can make you feel like a million bucks in just 30 seconds!

  • Go for a walk. Weather permitting, a 20-30 minute walk always clears my mind and gets me energized.

  • Eat something delicious! My favorite thing to do is Google search “3 ingredient recipes” for SUPER easy and delicious meals that will have you saying “how did I not already think of this?”

  • Facetime/call a friend. This one actually surprised me. I’m pretty introverted, but I’m still human and I NEED HUMAN CONTACT. Who knew? Every time I’ve had a video chat with a friend, my mood has gotten a huge boost.

  • Watch a funny TV show/movie. It’s insane how much it helps me to just get lost in a stupid show or movie. I’ll leave my phone in another room, snuggle up with my cats, and cackle as loud as I want.

  • Dance party! This can include other humans or animals. Wine is not required but is absolutely encouraged. I like to do my dancing in the shower. It’s dangerous, but that’s showbiz baby. Sometimes I just gotta live on the edge.

I know times are weird and it’s not super fun to receive unwarranted advice, but if you made it this far, you obviously kinda liked it a little bit. Try out a few of these and see how your mood changes! We are all in this together and hopefully soon we can get back to hanging out IRL, giving each other hugs, and enjoying our favorite restaurants together.
