How to Bring Balance to Our Oily Hair

It’s the bane of our existence, it’s the reason we say “SCREW IT” and throw on a hat. And it’s totally fixable. It’s oily roots! Whether it’s hormones, stress-related, or because you just spent an hour scrolling through Instagram on the elliptical - I’m here to give you a few tips to get that oil under control.

The skin on your scalp is just like the skin on your face. It’s got sebaceous glands that sometimes act a fool and overproduce sebum (that’s fancy talk for oil). Overwashing your hair can result in removing too much of the natural oils that your scalp produces. This can trick your scalp into thinking it needs to produce more oil!

I know, I know.. Washing less is easier said than done. However, we’ve got a ton of awesome products that make it much easier to go a few days between washes.

My #1 life-changing product that I cannot live without is BALANCING.WASH. This shampoo is meant to strengthen your scalp and help rebalance those pesky oils. BALANCING.WASH gently, but effectively cleanses the scalp - leaving your hair strong and shiny. Ylang Ylang flower oil is one of the many active ingredients you can thank for making your hair look, feel, and smell amazing.

If you're still seeing a lot of excess oil/build up and need to bring out the big guns - MAXI.WASH is a must. This shampoo is basically the exfoliate of your hair care routine. Product build up could possibly clog the pores on your scalp, which could be attributing to your oily probs. When used once a week as a pre-shampoo, MAXI.WASH can break down all of that icky build up and give you a fresh start for the week.  Follow up that MAXI.WASH with your favorite KM WASH and RINSE, then towel-dry and spritz in a bit of ANTI.GRAVITY spray. This product is super lightweight and has lavender water in it to balance oils.

Okay - so we’ve covered day 1.. But what about day 2 or 3 when things start looking funky?

Our FRESH.HAIR dry shampoo is seriously unlike any other dry shampoo I’ve ever used. Most dry shampoos leave the hair with a powdery film and gritty feeling. FRESH.HAIR is some sort of black magic that actually does make your hair look and feel cleaner without that gritty feeling. PLUS it kinda smells like a lemon cookie.. What’s better than that? When used at the root, FRESH.HAIR really lives up to its name and gives you gorgeous, clean looking hair.

Finally, we have to talk about those ends. On day 2 and 3, your ends may really start to lose their luster. Perhaps you need to use a bit more conditioner, or maybe you’re heat styling pretty often. Your hair could also appear dry when you’re overdue for a trim, or it could be genetic. Whatever the reason, KEVIN.MURPHY has you covered.

UN.TANGLED is a lovely little leave-in conditioner that is lightweight but high performance. Your hair will be left feeling hydrated and healthy when you use this regularly! SHIMMER.SHINE and SHIMMER.ME BLONDE are also great options for adding shine to dull locks. You’ll want to apply this when damp, and again when dry to see the full result.

Lastly, we’ve got a dry conditioner.. That’s right YOUNG.AGAIN DRY.CONDITIONER is one of the newest products in the KEVIN.MURPHY line and it’s perfect for any and all hair types to refresh, hydrate, and rejuvenate dry ends.

With a little bit of will power (I know it’s tempting to wash every day!), and all the right products, you can absolutely extend your time between shampoos and keep your hair looking and feeling fresh and free of excess oils. Talk to your stylist about which products will be perfect for you! We are always happy to help solve all of your biggest hair woes.
