What is a Gloss & Why Do You Need One?

Posted by Ansley Dooley on

If you’ve ever wondered why some people’s hair always looks effortlessly shiny, healthy, and expensive, there’s a good chance a gloss is the reason.

A professional gloss is one of the easiest ways to refresh faded color, boost shine, and keep your hair looking beautiful between appointments. Whether your hair is color-treated or completely natural, a gloss can revive dull-looking hair without requiring a dramatic color change.

Over the last few years, glosses have become one of the most requested services in the salon - and honestly, I’m not surprised. More and more clients are looking for ways to maintain beautiful hair without committing to a full color appointment every six to eight weeks. They want their color to stay rich, their blonde to stay bright, and their hair to have that fresh-from-the-salon shine for as long as possible.

That’s exactly where a gloss comes in.

It’s one of my favorite services to recommend because it can completely refresh your hair without changing your overall look. One of the best parts of my job is watching clients look in the mirror after a gloss appointment. Even when we haven’t made a major color change, they’re often amazed by how much shinier, softer, and more vibrant their hair looks. It’s one of those services where the difference is immediately noticeable.

So… What Exactly Is a Gloss?

A gloss is a professional salon service designed to enhance your hair’s tone, shine, and overall appearance. Rather than permanently changing your natural color, it gently deposits color to refresh what’s already there.

One thing that surprises many clients is that there isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” gloss formula.

Every gloss I create is customized specifically for the person sitting in my chair. I consider how your color has faded, your hair’s porosity, the undertones showing through, and even how your hair reflects light. Two brunettes may both want richer, shinier hair, but they’ll often leave with completely different formulas because everyone’s hair fades differently.

That’s one of the biggest advantages of a professional gloss. It isn’t just about adding shine - it’s about creating results that are tailored specifically to your hair and your goals.

A gloss can help:

  • Refresh faded color

  • Neutralize unwanted brassiness

  • Add richness and depth

  • Enhance your natural color

  • Boost shine

  • Leave your hair feeling softer and smoother

Why Does a Gloss Add So Much Shine?

Healthy hair reflects light evenly.

Over time, heat styling, UV exposure, hard water, chlorine, washing, and everyday environmental stress can cause the outer layer of your hair - the cuticle - to become rough and uneven. Instead of reflecting light, the hair scatters it, making it appear dull, dry, or faded.

That’s why a gloss is often my recommendation for hair that feels dull, faded, or like it’s lost its sparkle.

By smoothing the cuticle, a gloss allows your hair to reflect light more evenly, creating noticeably shinier, silkier-looking hair.

At Kate Kandel Salon, we use KEVIN.MURPHY COLOR.ME GLOSS, and one of the reasons I love this color line is that the GLOSS+ formulas do more than simply refresh your tone. They also incorporate bond-building technology to help reinforce the hair during the service. While it isn’t a replacement for a dedicated repair treatment, it’s one reason many of my clients tell me their hair feels softer, stronger, and more manageable after their appointment.

A Gloss Isn’t Just for Blondes

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that glosses are only for blondes.

The truth is, almost everyone can benefit from one.

Blondes

A gloss helps neutralize unwanted yellow or orange tones while keeping blonde hair bright, balanced, and fresh between lightening appointments.

Brunettes

For brunettes, glosses restore richness, deepen dimension, and eliminate unwanted warmth that develops over time. It’s one of my favorite ways to bring dull brunette hair back to life.

Redheads

Red tones naturally fade faster than most other shades. A gloss helps revive vibrancy, enhance copper or auburn tones, and keep reds looking intentional instead of washed out.

Natural Hair

Even if you’ve never colored your hair, a clear gloss can dramatically improve shine, smoothness, and softness without changing your natural color.

How Do You Know If You Need a Gloss?

One of the most common things I hear is:

“My hair just doesn’t look as fresh anymore.”

Usually, that’s exactly when I recommend a gloss.

You may benefit from a gloss if:

  • Your color looks faded before your next appointment.

  • Your blonde is becoming brassy.

  • Your brunette has lost richness.

  • Your red no longer feels vibrant.

  • Your hair has lost its shine.

  • Your hair feels dull or lifeless.

  • You want your hair to look freshly done without booking another full color service.

Sometimes your hair doesn’t need another major color appointment - it simply needs a refresh.

How Long Does a Gloss Last?

Most professional glosses last about 4-6 weeks, depending on:

  • Your hair’s porosity

  • How often you wash your hair

  • The products you use at home

  • Heat styling habits

  • Sun exposure

  • Chlorine

Using professional color-safe products and a quality heat protectant can help extend the life of your gloss and keep your color looking fresh longer.

Why I Recommend Glosses Between Color Appointments

One of the most common things I hear from clients is:

“I miss how my hair looked right after my appointment, but I don’t think I need another full color service yet.”

When I hear that, a gloss is almost always my first recommendation.

It’s one of the easiest ways to refresh faded color, restore shine, tone unwanted warmth, and extend the life of your previous appointment without the time or commitment of another major color service.

Sometimes the biggest transformation doesn’t come from changing your hair. It comes from enhancing what’s already there.

Is a Gloss Right for You?

Beautiful hair isn’t always about going lighter, darker, or making a dramatic change.

Sometimes it’s simply about bringing your hair back to life.

A gloss is one of the most versatile services I offer because it’s completely customized to your hair and your goals. Whether you’re maintaining blonde, refreshing brunette, reviving red, or simply wanting healthier-looking hair, it can make an incredible difference.

If you’ve been feeling like your hair has lost its shine, softness, or richness, there’s a good chance you don’t need a complete color transformation.

You might just need a gloss.
