7 Everyday Hair Habits That Could Be Damaging Your Hair (And How to Fix Them)

Posted by Ansley Dooley on

Healthy hair isn’t just about using great shampoo or investing in professional styling products. Your everyday hair care habits play a major role in preventing breakage, reducing frizz, preserving color, and keeping your hair looking its best.

As a stylist at Kate Kandel Salon in downtown Greenville, SC, one of my favorite parts of working with clients is helping them build healthier hair routines that fit their lifestyle. Often, it’s the small habits we don’t think twice about that have the biggest impact over time.

Here are seven everyday habits that could be damaging your hair - and simple ways to protect it.

1. Skipping Heat Protectant Before Styling

Whether you’re blow-drying, curling, or straightening your hair, styling without a heat protectant can gradually weaken the hair cuticle, leading to dryness, breakage, and split ends.

Heat protectants create a protective barrier between your hair and hot tools, helping reduce moisture loss while minimizing damage.

Some of my favorite professional heat protectants include:

  • KEVIN.MURPHY HEATED.DEFENSE: a lightweight leave-in foam that protects hair from heat while keeping it soft and touchable.

  • Virtue Labs 6-in-1 Styler: offers heat protection while smoothing frizz, adding shine, improving softness, and enhancing manageability.

  • Virtue Labs Strength & Shield Leave-In Conditioner: protects against heat and environmental stress while strengthening hair and helping reduce breakage over time.

Pro Tip: Apply heat protectant to damp hair before blow-drying. If you’re using a curling iron or flat iron afterward, apply additional protection designed for dry hair if needed.

2. Sleeping With Wet Hair

If you regularly go to bed with wet hair, you may be increasing your risk of tangles, breakage, and frizz.

Hair is at its weakest when wet. As you move during sleep, friction against your pillowcase places extra stress on fragile strands.

Whenever possible, let your hair dry before bed or gently blow-dry it using a low heat setting.

3. Washing Your Hair Too Often - or Not Often Enough

One of the most common questions I hear is:

“How often should I wash my hair?”

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Overwashing can strip away natural oils that keep hair healthy, while waiting too long between washes may lead to oil buildup, product residue, and an unhealthy scalp.

The ideal washing routine depends on your hair type, scalp condition, activity level, and styling routine - not someone else’s schedule.

4. Using Hair Products That Aren’t Right for Your Hair

Just because a product worked for your friend - or went viral on social media - doesn’t mean it’s the right fit for you.

The best hair products are chosen based on your:

  • Hair texture

  • Density

  • Scalp condition

  • Hair goals

  • Color services

  • Styling routine

Using products that aren’t designed for your hair can leave it feeling dry, heavy, flat, or difficult to manage.

When you’re unsure what products are right for you, ask your stylist for personalized recommendations.

5. Wearing Tight Hairstyles Every Day

Sleek ponytails, tight buns, and braided styles can be beautiful, but wearing them every day places repeated tension on your hair and scalp.

Over time, this constant pulling may contribute to:

  • Hairline breakage

  • Increased shedding

  • Stress on the hair shaft

Try rotating your hairstyles throughout the week and choose softer hair ties whenever possible.

6. Using Styling Tools at the Highest Heat Setting

Many people assume hotter styling tools produce better results.

In reality, excessive heat often causes unnecessary damage.

Using temperatures that are too high can:

  • Dry out your hair

  • Cause color to fade faster

  • Increase split ends

  • Reduce shine

Most hair types don’t need the maximum temperature setting. Using the lowest effective heat setting is often enough to achieve smooth, long-lasting results while protecting your hair.

7. Waiting Too Long Between Haircuts

Skipping trims doesn’t slow down hair growth - but it can allow split ends to travel farther up the hair shaft.

Regular trims help maintain healthier ends, reduce breakage, and keep your hair looking fuller while supporting your long-term hair goals.

Even if you’re growing your hair longer, routine maintenance appointments help keep it looking its best.

Healthy Hair Starts With Healthy Habits

Building healthier hair doesn’t require a complete routine overhaul. Small, consistent changes - like using a heat protectant, choosing products that fit your hair type, and scheduling regular trims - can make a noticeable difference over time.
